Merariq is a unique marriage system in which the boy must elope with or kidnap the girl before they have the ritual marriage. Merariq is common happened among the Sasak society in Lombok that the majority are Moslem. Thus, to understand this phenomenon more deeply, this research aim are 1) to understand the practice and process of merariq, 2) to explore the view of the Sasak Moslem society relating with merariq system and 3) to understand the relevancy merariq with the life of the Sasak Moslem society.
To answer those questions the empiric sociologis and literature research have been done. This is a qualitative research. The research location is Prapen village, Praya subdistrict, Lombok Tenggah District, West Nusa Tenggara. The primary data have been collected from the informant. The data collected is about description and explanation about merariq system. The secondary data come from the literatures and related documents.
The research findings suggest that merariq usually done by villagers or those who still keep up traditions. The merariq process begin with the boy elope with or kidnap the girl without nobody knows them, especially the girl’s family. After that the man’s family must immediately inform the girl’s family that their daughter has been kidnapped. The information must be quickly sent before three days, the sooner the better. Then wedding party will be held in the boy’s family house. After having a ritual ceremony, the new marriage couple will visit the girl’s family house. This ceremony is called nyongkol. This is done in order to show the respect of the new couple to the parents, especially to the girl’s family. They are accompanied by a lot of patrons and traditional music dancer. After that they will go back to the boy’s family house. There are several reasons why merariq is done. Firstly, to show the seriousness of the boy. Secondly, to show his bravery, like a knight. Thirdly, because of historical reasons. Fourthly, it is kind of competition. However, presently merariq practice has been changing due to lack of understanding of the one who do merariq about the tradition regulation and religion teaching.
The Sasak Moslem society has two opinions relating merariq. First, from the lay people point of view. They see that there is no problem practicing the merariq as long as it is done concord with tradition regulation and religion teaching. Secondly, from the educated people point of view. They more aware with the impact of merariq that sometime result a lot of conflict. Thus, it should be found other alternatives that simpler and better to avoid the negative effects of merariq that may occurs. From the Islamic marriage law point of view, there is gab from the normative point of view as well as benefit of merariq. In conclusion the existence of merariq tradition does not relevant any more with the life of Sasak Moslem society that more growing in their understanding about the Islamic teaching. Thus, the merariq practice should be reconsidered.
